Open the steam website: make a new steam account there by hitting: login then Join Steam. There are instructions on how to do it correctly on the second page of the comments, follow it and you should be fine. If you make sure to do everything right you won't be penalized for it. You likely did something wrong i.e, you weren't offline, you didn't use the save utility etc. I highly suggest not downloading this mod.
